The Thieves 'Oil or sometimes known as Thieves' Oil is not something new. It is an ancient remedy that comes with a very interesting story.

It is said that during the 15th century in France, while the Bubonic Plague raged in Europe and claimed the lives of thousands of people, in the year 1413, four thieves were captured and accused of stealing from the dying or dead. The most interesting thing about this story is that with such a contagious and lethal plague these four thieves were not contagious in the process of performing such a frightful act.

When the shoplifters were put on trial, the intrigued magistrate offered clemency only if they revealed the secret of how they resisted this horrible plague. The defendants explained that they were perfumers and species merchants. They explained that they had created a mixture of aromatic herbs that rubbed on their hands, ears and temples and prevented them from contracting such a lethal disease.

The formula called pickliers oil was created based on research done on cooking used by thieves in the 15th century.

It is a blend of various essential oils, most often:

  • Lemon
  • Cinnamon
  • Eucalyptus
  • Rosemary
  • Nails

Some of the potential benefits of pickpocket oil include: boosting immune function and fighting infections.

But what does research really say about thieves' oil? And how can you use it in your day to day? Read on to find out more.

Benefits and research:

You may have heard that pickpocket oil has the following benefits:

  • Stimulates the imune system
  • Has anti-microbial activity
  • Fight against nasal congestion and Sinusitis
  • Promotes respiratory and cardiovascular health
  • Energize and lift your spirits

Many of these benefits are based on anecdotes and testimonials. This does not mean that they are not valid but that they are personal experiences.

However, there are researchers who are working hard to discover and demonstrate the benefits of essential oils and how they are related to health.

Research on rateros oil specifically is quite limited. A 1996 study indicated that the diffusion of the Thiery Oil mixture can significantly reduce the number of aerosol-borne bacteria and may have application in indoor air treatment and prevent the transmission of aerosol-borne bacterial pathogens.

Much more research has been done on the benefits of the individual components of thief oil.

Benefits of the oils individually:

Antiseptic properties (anti-microbes)

  • A 2017 study found that low concentrations of cinnamon and clove oil had high antimicrobial activity against persistent crops of Borrelia burgdorferi , the causative agent of Lyme disease.
  • A 2018 study found that cinnamon oil vapors inhibited the growth of respiratory pathogens like Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae in a Petri dish. But eucalyptus oil had little activity.
  • A 2012 study showed that eucalyptus oil had antimicrobial activity against two types of bacteria that can cause disease in humans: Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus .
  • A 2019 study noted that lemon oil has some antimicrobial properties.

Wound healing

  • A 2019 study in mice found that topical application of cinnamaldehyde , a component of cinnamon oil, promoted wound healing. It also reduced the amount of bacteria in wounds infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
  • A 2018 study in mice found that a specialized emulsion preparation containing eucalyptus oil promoted wound healing.

Pain relief

  • A 2019 study in mice looked at the potential pain-relieving effects of eucalyptus oil. The researchers found that injecting or inhaling eucalyptus oil could be effective in relieving some types of pain.

Effects on mood

  • A small 2013 study investigated the effects of inhaling rosemary oil on mood. By recording and comparing body changes such as heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, and other physical measurements, the researchers concluded that rosemary oil had a stimulating effect.
  • In the same study, the researchers also found that participants who inhaled rosemary oil felt fresher or more active. Increases in respiratory rate, heart rate, and blood pressure were also observed.

In conclusion

The potential benefits of shoplifting oil also known as robber oil include boosting the immune system, promoting respiratory health, and fighting microbes.

Although some of these benefits are anecdotal, the individual components of thief oil have been shown to have antimicrobial properties, promote wound healing, and can relieve pain.

As with any essential oil, always be sure to follow proper safety precautions when using thief oil.

If you have any concerns about using thief oil, talk to your doctor first.
